Cousin, Victor

Cousin, Victor
(1792-1867)
   philosopher
Born in Paris, Victor Cousin was professor at the École normale supérieure and at the sorbonne, and served as minister of public instruction (1840) in the cabinet of louis-adolphe thiers. In that capacity, he reorganized the system of primary education and encouraged philosophical studies at the higher levels. Influenced by other thinkers of the period, Cousin can perhaps be considered the founder of the modern philosophical school of eclecticism and of the history of philosophy. Stating that no single philosophical system is entirely correct, he combined aspects of mysticism, skepticism, idealism, and materialism into his own eclectic system of thought. He was the first to introduce into France the philosophy of G. F. W. Hegel (Fragments de philosophie, 1826; Cours d'histoire de la philosophie, 1828). Cousin was elected to the Académie Française in 1830.
